TU Bill Update 14/6/17
With the USI President-elect, Annie Hoey, current USI President, met with representatives from the Department of Education to discuss the TU Bill. They received assurances that the Bill would be put forward again in September, having received sign-off from the trade unions involved. While USI concerns were listened to, it was made very clear to them that there was no desire to make any changes to the Bill, as they simply want to get it through and are determined to deal with any amendments at a later date.
Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has for many years been on the path towards gaining university status and is committed to the delivery of a 21st century university to the South East.
In 2016, the Higher Education Authority announced a funding commitment of €1.5m towards the planning process for a technological university for the South East region. This will enable WIT and IT Carlow to develop and implement an action plan to lead to delivering a university of international standing for the South East which will support the economic and social development of the region.

South East Technological University moves closer to becoming a reality
Efforts to create the much needed South East University have stepped up a gear with the formal announcement by the two institutes of technology in the region of their intention to submit a detailed business plan for the Technological University to the Higher Education Authority early next year.
