WITSU Update: August 2017

What your union has been doing for you?

Your WITSU Officers and School Convenors have been busy getting ready for the beginning of the academic year in September, this means planning for the incoming freshers, international students and of course the returning ones! Everyone has also been attending various training from the Union of Students Ireland and EQ Consulting to make sure they have the best knowledge to help students throughout the year on a variety of issues. We have also hired new shop staff and a new graphic designer, make sure to pop into our shops for all your printing and binding needs!

We have put together amazing goodie bags for all of our incoming freshers and met with local and national companies to sort out great deals for students and to hopefully arrange some campus activities with these companies. We are currently finalising Project Nightclub and The Dome Bar acts for Freshers’ Week and campus activities to keep everyone busy and happy for the upcoming year.  Our first event this year is the International Student party which is being held on the 7th of September at 7:30pm in the Dome Bar to welcome all of our incoming international students. All WIT students are welcome to attend.

The proposal for the new WITSU office and social space for students has also been finalised, the aim is to increase student engagement and give everyone a chill space to relax in!  We have all been working hard on making sure our new WITSU constitution covers all the needs of the students ahead of introducing it for a referendum in October.

Finally, we have been preparing for the National Demo on October 4th in Dublin along with other SUs’ and USI in opposition to the proposed loan schemes and we will be requesting Publically Funded Education, we’d love for everyone to get involved! Don’t forget to come up to us if you’d like to be registered to vote, it’s important to have your voice heard.

Education Update:

Marie has been busy gathering and analysing the data from our Library Services Survey that we sent out to students, we want to make sure our student’s opinions are heard on this vital service and anyway it can be improved for them.

She has finalised the terms of reference for Class Reps in Class Rep Council which will be provided to them at their training, as well as finalising the WITSU policy book. While also planning different training and events for Upskill Week to make sure it caters to our diverse range of students.

Welfare Update:

With the current accommodation situation in Waterford being busy we have been in constant contact with USI and local radios and newspapers trying to make more bed space available for students in Waterford. Celine has been very busy answering queries and helping students find accommodation. Please contact Celine if you have any issues regarding accommodation.

Celine has also recruited buddies for our International Buddy scheme to help our international students get settled in. It is not too late to become a buddy, if you are interested please check out our Facebook for more information on this.

Part-time Officers Update:

Entertainments Officer Mikey has been putting together events for the upcoming year which we’re hoping everyone will love! While Cathal our communications officer has been recording instructional videos for new students for when they arrive such as a cheap and easy recipe video and a hilarious how to dance instructional. Also, he has been working on a new an online newsletter which will be launched soon.

Mature Student Officer Steve has been busy getting ready to welcome all of our incoming mature student freshers and making sure they feel will feel comfortable and welcomed as well as organising various activities and events.
