Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably, specific to their needs, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age.
Promoting equality should remove discrimination in all of the mentioned areas. Bullying, harassment or victimization are also considered as equality and diversity issues.
WIT and Equality
WIT places great value in having a diverse student population. Equality in WIT has five major focuses; students with disability, LGBT students, gender equality, international students and mature students. Help breakdown stereotypes and fight against discrimination within third level education. Get involved this year and stand up for education not discrimination.
Please feel free to contact the student union at any time if you feel that you or somebody else is being bullied or discriminated against.
Mature students comprise almost 15% of the student population in WIT – which is a sizeable amount and is set to increase again this year.
LGBT is an abbreviation referring collectively to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Coming to college is a daunting and intimidating experience. It can be even more difficult and isolating if you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or have just recently started to question your sexuality. Regardless how you feel about yourself and the people around you, coming ‘out’ and being ‘out’ can sometimes be a nerve wrecking time.
Whether your disability is physical, sensory, a mental health disorder, specific learning disability or if you suffer from a chronic ongoing illness, there are supports available for you.
WIT welcomes a wide variety of international students from all over the globe! International students are an amazing way of learning different cultures and practices. Being an international student allows you to experience life in a different country and learn new things but it can also be a very daunting experience. Here are some quick tips and usual information for international students. If you need any more help or information you can contact the INTERNATIONAL OFFICE on 051 302724 or the International Officer Áine Sexton on email@example.com.
